Why "Bhutan GNH Heritage Travel"

Named after an idea, not a place.

In 1972, Bhutan's fourth king said something that would go on to shape national policy — that Gross National Happiness matters more than Gross Domestic Product. Today it's why Bhutan is the only carbon-negative country on earth, and why tourism here is priced to protect the country from itself.

We put those three letters at the center of our name to hold ourselves to that same standard: a journey should give more than it takes — to the traveller, and to the valleys the road passes through. Heritage does the other half of the work. The dzongs, the lhakhangs, the festivals — living, working sites, not exhibits arranged for arrivals.

Sustainable Development

The country is carbon-negative by policy — 60% forest cover is written into the constitution. Our vehicles are electric.

Dress code, architecture, and language are protected by law. On our itineraries, this is what you meet — not a set built for you.

Tourism is regulated by the Tourism Council — a High Value, Low Impact policy that limits crowds and protects places.

Time is treated as a resource. Our itineraries are deliberately unhurried, because a rushed valley isn't a felt one.

Most operators keep a wall between the person who plans your trip and the person who leads it. We removed that wall. The founder is the guide — the enquiry, the itinerary, and the walk to Taktsang all pass through the same pair of hands.

Mahasur founded Bhutan GNH Heritage Travel in 2019 after years of guiding for other operators. He built the company he had always wanted to work for — small enough that the person you speak with is the person who plans your trip, and often the person who leads it.

His dual role is deliberate. As founder, he is answerable for every promise on this website. As Chief Guide, he stands in the courtyard at Punakha Dzong and tells you why the murals face east. If something on your itinerary changes at the last minute, it isn't a co-ordinator emailing you from a desk — it's Mahasur, on the road with you, working out the next step.
